EXPEDITION FILMS PRESENTS THE "THE SURPRISE PARTY"

Full-Length Feature is the First to be Edited with
Apple Computer’s Final Cut Pro Software

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – September 7, 1999 – Expedition Films LLC today announced that it has completed editing for its first independent feature film, "The Surprise Party." The company also announced that its GenerationX romantic comedy is the first full-length feature film to be edited on Apple Computer’s recently released Final Cut Pro software.

The Surprise Party illustrates one simple truth – that all relationships are full of surprises. The film centers on Oscar who intends to ask Penny to marry him on his birthday. But through twists of fate, Oscar is forced to face unsettling truths about himself and his relationships with friends, family and most importantly, Penny. The Surprise Party is Writer/Director Garrett Rice's feature film debut.

After principal photography on the film was completed in March, editor Patrick Murphy digitized 12 hours of video-transferred film footage from "The Surprise Party" into Final Cut Pro via Digital Video (DV) through the Firewire port on the Power Macintosh G3. He then used Final Cut Pro's powerful editing and compositing capabilities to do create a 104 minute finished film, complete with a multi-track sound mix. Now, editing data from Final Cut Pro will be used make precise cuts on the raw film stock and build a Dolby stereo soundtrack. Then the final film will be assembled.

As an independent film company, Expedition Films sought to put together the most complete, professional quality, non-linear editing system for the lowest cost. Apple’s hardware and software combination proved to be the most efficient and effective solution, costing less than $5,000.

"We are delighted to have The Surprise Party be the first full-length feature film produced with Apple’s Final Cut Pro," said Garrett Rice, the film’s writer and director. "Both creatively and financially, Final Cut Pro was a huge success for us. It let us do everything we wanted to do and more. Now that editing is complete, we look forward to going back to film, so that we can show-off our efforts – and the power of Apple’s software – at a major film festival."
